Thirty chapters in six parts. Every recipe is laid out the same way: a paragraph on what the dish actually was and what the wear on those cards looked like, then The card says, then If it went wrong, then Otis's note. Most carry a tag: THE MONEY MOVED, THE TIME MOVED, or WE QUIT LIKING IT.

I am sixty-four, and for forty years I have been the man a family calls when somebody dies and the place has to be empty before the sale. Bedrooms first, then the closets, then the basement, and I save the kitchen for last, because the kitchen is the room that talks.
My wife June cooked her way through every one of these cards, so what is printed here is a recipe you can follow and not a note a woman wrote to herself. Nobody lightened them up and nobody improved them. My job was to read the wear, get the numbers right, and tell you the truth about how it tastes, including the ones I would leave in the box.
